Position Overview

The Junior Engineering Technologist is responsible for assisting in the design, survey, and drafting of LNID’s engineering and irrigation infrastructure projects. This role supports the Engineering Department in the planning, design, and delivery of capital works, rehabilitation projects, and operational improvements. The position ensures engineering tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with District standards and policies.

The ideal candidate demonstrates technical proficiency in design, surveying, drafting, and analysis; is detail-oriented; and possesses strong problem-solving and communication skills. This position also includes field work, project coordination, and technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Project Support

  • Apply engineering principles, technologies, and sound judgment to support assigned projects.
  • Assist with planning, hydraulic modeling, design, drafting, reporting, tendering, construction inspection, and commissioning.
  • Conduct site-specific condition and capacity assessments, including associated reporting.
  • Support review and evaluation of contractor and consultant work, following up on corrective actions as directed.
  • Assist in the development of the District's Asset Management Program and Water Management Model.
  • Represent LNID professionally during meetings, site visits, and technical discussions.

Reporting & Communication

  • Work under the direction of the Technical Services Manager, ensuring timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Provide collaborative, respectful, and effective written and verbal communication with LNID staff, consultants, and contractors.
  • Report on project progress, challenges, and recommendations to the Technical Services Manager.

Equipment & Software Management

  • Utilize AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and QGIS for drafting, mapping, and spatial analysis.
  • Perform field surveys using GPS-based equipment and apply Autodesk drafting techniques.
  • Learn and maintain familiarity with LNID software, procedures, and engineering tools.
  • Recommend improvements in tools, processes, and training that support department efficiency.

Project Coordination & Workflow Management

  • Manage personal work schedule to align with department efficiency and project timelines.
  • Identify and report potential project delays or scheduling risks.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawings, and records.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or approved by the Technical Services Manager.
Working Conditions
  • Office-based with regular fieldwork and occasional overtime as required.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and be able to work in varying weather conditions.
What We are Looking For

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of engineering methods related to planning, design, cost estimation, construction, and inspection.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS software (QGIS), Microsoft Office Suite, web-based applications, and hydraulic modeling tools.
  • Familiarity with GPS-based survey equipment and data processing techniques.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, troubleshooting, interpolation, optimization, and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency in technical writing.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Willingness to learn and grow in the role, particularly in the area of modeling techniques and asset management.
Education & Experience:
  • Graduate or upcoming graduate of an accredited civil or engineering technology program.
  • Must be eligible for registration with ASET (Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta).
  • Experience in engineering design, drafting, or surveying is preferred.
  • Experience in irrigation, water infrastructure, computer modeling, or municipal engineering is an asset.
